A kinetic theory of homogeneous bubble nucleation

چکیده
We present a kinetic theory of homogeneous bubble nucleation based on explicit calculation of the single-molecule evaporation and condensation rates as a function of the size of the vapor embryo. The surface condensation rate is calculated from the kinetic theory of gases, and the surface evaporation rate is related to the rate of escape of molecules from a potential well in the field established by the liquid–vapor interface. Equality of these rates corresponds naturally to the critical bubble. While the interface plays a crucial role in this respect, the kinetic nucleation theory does not invoke an explicit surface tension. The nucleation rate is derived from a population balance and depends only on the ratio of the evaporation to condensation rates. In contrast to classical theory, a nontrivial trend captured by the present theory is the increase in nucleation rate with decreasing temperature at fixed degree of metastability. Comparison with classical nucleation theory reveals markedly different supersaturation dependencies of the nucleation rate, while the predicted sizes of the critical bubble are in good agreement. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1526836#

Availability Analysis For Heterogeneous Nucleation In A Uniform Electric Field
Industrial demands for more compact heat exchangers are a motivation to find new technology features. Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) is introduced as a promising phenomenon for heat transfer enhancement mechanisms. Similar to any new technology, EHD has not been understood completely yet and requires more fundamental studies. In boiling phase change phenomena, nucleation is the dominant mechanism i...
متن کاملDirect Simulations of Homogeneous Bubble Nucleation: Agreement with CNT and no Local Hot Spots
We present results from direct, large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of homogeneous bubble (liquid-to-vapor) nucleation. The simulations contain half a billion Lennard-Jones atoms and cover up to 56 million time steps. The unprecedented size of the simulated volumes allows us to resolve the nucleation and growth of many bubbles per run in simple direct micro-canonical simulations while th...
متن کاملDensity-functional study of homogeneous bubble nucleation in the stretched Lennard-Jones fluid
Density-functional theory is used to study homogeneous bubble nucleation in the stretched Lennard-Jones liquid. We show that the ratio of density-functional to classical nucleation theory free energy barriers should scale with the quantity Dm/Dmspin , the difference in chemical potential between the bulk superheated and the saturated liquid divided by the chemical potential difference between t...
متن کاملHomogeneous bubble nucleation driven by local hot spots: a molecular dynamics study.
We report a molecular dynamics study of homogeneous bubble nucleation in a Lennard-Jones fluid. The rate of bubble nucleation is estimated using forward-flux sampling (FFS). We find that cavitation starts with compact bubbles rather than with ramified structures, as had been suggested by Shen and Debenedetti (J. Chem. Phys. 1999, 111, 3581). Our estimate of the bubble-nucleation rate is higher ...

General thermodynamic and kinetic approaches for sublimation inside an elastoplastic material are developed for large strains. Various conceptual problems related to the effect of irreversible plastic deformation and dissipation, path-dependence of the appearance of a critical nucleus, and the presence of large strains are considered. Two transformation paths are studied: nucleation via homogen...
